How Effective Are the Common Treatments for Metastatic Cancer?
Treatments for metastatic cancers have proven difficult. Metastatic cells have different characteristics compared to non-metastatic cancer cells. Because of this, it has been challenging for the medical community to find the best approach in treating it. Current treatments have made limited progress and have remained mostly the same for decades. Available options for patients generally include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Each of these therapies have terrible side effects and are often incapable of destroying cancer completely or effectively. Instead of considering alternative, natural options like Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria, medical professionals continue to rely on toxic, lucrative treatments.
Though hormones are created naturally by the body, these chemicals can be triggers for several types of cancer when they are present in abnormal proportions. Both men and women are at risk. Estrogen is the most well- known culprit and has been identified as one of the causes of breast cancer in women. The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone during pre-menopause, while post-menopause, estrogen is made in body fat. In men, high levels of a certain type of estrogen known as 4-OHE1 has been linked to the elevated risk of prostate cancer. However, the particular study also noted that certain types of estrogen which are linked to breast cancer in women may actually protect against prostate cancer.
Hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer, are usually treated with hormone treatment therapy. These therapies lower the levels of estrogen, which limit its effects. Hormone therapy works only if the cancer has estrogen receptors. According to research, 70% of breast cancers have estrogen receptors, but almost all patients eventually develop resistance. Patients are told to remain on the treatments for as long as they work before being moved onto the next.
In men, hormone therapy is used to reduce levels of the male hormone testosterone to prevent its tumor promoting effect. This so-called chemical castration works for some time, though there are many side effects. Eventually the cancer becomes resistant to the drugs (Lubpron, Casadex). Recent research has shown that the plant extract, Pao pereira, is effective against these advanced prostate cancer cells that no longer respond to hormone treatments. Studies on another extract, Rauwolfia vomitoria, showed significant suppression of cancer cell growth and progression of prostate cancer cells. Both extracts together have demonstrated effectiveness against the development of prostate cancer cells entirely without side effects. As of yet, neither extract has been wholly accepted by the medical community, and so the following treatments continue to remain the standard care alone.
There are several different types of hormone treatment therapy. These include tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors, progesterone, fulvestrant and goserelin to stop the ovaries from working. Each of these treatments have many side effects, such as digestive problems, muscle and bone changes and mood changes. They are then treated with more drugs than can also cause side effects, such as anti-sickness drugs.
Chemotherapy is one of the most widely used cancer treatments worldwide. The procedure uses either a single or multiple cyotoxic drugs. These drugs are injected into the bloodstream or targeted at specific cancer sites. Despite attempts at targeting cancer sites, these drugs affect not only cancer cells, but healthy ones as well. This causes many severe adverse reactions, some of which have long-lasting effects such as nerve damage. These side effects are then treated with a host of other medications through palliative care. Sometimes the damage done by chemotherapy is permanent.
This treatment can cause cognitive dysfunction and permanent damage to the heart, lung, liver kidneys and reproductive system. Two of the most dangerous side effects of chemotherapy are neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. This occurs when blood cell counts are low, so the patient has trouble fighting infections and may no longer be able to form blood clots. Radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells or slow their growth by damaging DNA. This process doesn’t kill the cancer immediately. It takes days or weeks for the treatment to take effect, but then it continues to kill cancer cells even after the treatment is completed. There is external beam radiation therapy which targets only a specific part of the body. Internal radiation therapy is treatment that is put inside your body using either a liquid or solid. Much like chemotherapy, radiation therapy not does not target cancer cells individually. It targets all cells and therefore has severe side effects depending on where the radiation is being targeted. None of the treatments listed are capable of preventing cancer’s reoccurrence. In the case of radiation therapy, there is even a small chance that the therapy itself can cause the reoccurrence. Most of these treatments are only effective in early stages of cancer. Chemotherapy only has a 2.1% survival rate and worsens quality of life if administered in late stage cancers. According to studies, the only option that has shown a high success rate is radiation therapy, and that was specifically for prostate cancer. The medical community does not know how to prevent metastasis from occurring, and do not have a way of successfully tracking cancer cells that have spread from the initial site. Metastatic cancer accounts for 90% of cancer deaths and has not changed over the last half a century. However, new studies are being conducted and some have even found a compound that stops the spread of certain cancers. Unfortunately, the answer to treatment options always seems to be a new synthetic drug or lab created chemical. Rarely does science ever look for a natural treatment, and even when a viable option has been found, such as Rauwolfia vomitoria and Pao pereira, it is ignored.
